I’ve always loved friendship day, especially as a kid.
It was great fun to buy (or make!) bracelets and give them to each member of the class, and anyone in the corridor with a familiar face. Initially, it was a sign of friends, then a sign of how many people I know, and ultimately…it petered out.
Looking at the uncountable posts on friendship day this year, for a second, I felt sorry for myself. I’d not featured in any of them.
But then, the next moment, I realised that these aren’t shows of true friendship anyways.
A true friend is someone you can rant to, without fear of judgement. Someone who you trust will never bitch about you behind your back, and someone who respects your boundaries while understanding them.
True friendship is reconnecting after 2 months with the same passion as 2 days, and not talking for a year but making plans to meet up.
So its clear to me.
The insta friendship day posts, personally, are a way to pass time, but never to measure my own friendships.
It’s not the loud proclamations, it’s the silent showing up that matters…
